Dark academia is one of those genres that is so distinctive but somehow kinda difficult to explain. I think the problem is that is so many things in one. It is darkness and intellect and self discovery and confrontation of one’s darkest self. All in one deliciously fashionable package. If you understood any of what I said at all then you understand dark academia. It is an incredible aesthetic and I wanted to share some dark academia fashion looks that basically embody that aesthetic.

Dark academia is all about dark colors. Mostly browns and beiges, sometimes greens, anything dark and earthy. When it comes to fashion dark academia is often expressed in the form of blazers and cardigans and lots and lots of layers of clothes. Think dark and moody oxford student. Which makes sense because dark academia sort of revolves around the academic institution and that aesthetic.

1. Sweater

This style is all about the sweater. The chunkier the better! An oversized sweater and a cinched belt? Ugh gorgeous! . . . Since the aesthetic is dark academia, the colors of choice would be browns and beiges.

2. Oversized Jacket

You can never go wrong with a good trench coat, your cool + mysterious levels go up as soon as you put on that piece of clothing, its almost magic.

3. Cardigan

No, we’re not talking about the Taylor Swift song… Cardigans are underrated and can be understated but, they pull together these looks so well!

4. Flannel

Get flannel shirt

Flannel gets such a bad rep but with the right aesthetic, you can come up with such interesting looking outfits.

5. Blazer

Everyone loves a good blazer, but I won’t lie they are tough to pull off. If you’re brave enough why not try one of these delicious blazer jacket outfits?

6. Sweater Vest

I won’t lie, I always believed the sweater vest to be a clothing item that was meant exclusively for men but dude I was so wrong! Sweater vests on women are stylish and interesting.

7. Turtle Neck

Are turtle necks actually making a come back? I won’t lie, I’m not mad at it at all.

8. Layers

I am absolutely obsessed with this trend of layering clothing, especially in this aesthetic. It is very fashionable.

9. Turtle Neck + Jacket

The layering of turtle necks/ sweaters with jackets is another example of a fashionable trend within this little world that is dark academia fashion.
