You know what the thing is about braided hairstyles for black women? There are always so many new fun styles to try out! Because of this it can sometimes be hard to choose what new hairstyle to try, which is why I’m here to make your decision a little easier by sharing some insanely cute braided hairstyles that have really been trending recently.

It’s a good thing that black hairstylists keep innovating because I remember the days when all we had were chunky box braids and terrible wings for our hairstyle options. It’s so good to finally have actual options that actually have style and personality.

So what type of protective hairstyles have been trending lately?

Everyone seems to be gravitating towards boho style, messy braids lately. Something like box braids with loose curly tendrils of hair attached to them I can totally understand why this style is so popular! These types of braids give off a fun and free spirited vibe you can’t get with other styles.

Aside from that twisted hairstyles also seem to be making a comeback. Whether its short kinky twists, passion twists or classic twists, there seems to be no wrong choice. It’s all about picking a style that suits the aesthetic you are currently vibing with.

So, get ready to embrace your inner goddess and explore the gorgeous possibilities that will hopefully inspire your next hairstyle!

10 Cute and Trendy Braided Hairstyles for Black Women

1. Messy Box Braids

People sometimes call this style of braids as pick and drop braids or mermaid braids. And they are this relatively new and trendy style of doing your box braids that has loose straight strands of hair running through your braids. It’s a fun, messy hairstyle that has this bohemian girl aesthetic. And it’s totally the type of hairstyle that looks better the longer you keep it in. Also if you can do this hair with human hair then you gotta do, of course this is going to be a more expensive choice but totally worth it for the outcome you get.

2. French Curl Braids

To be fair, french curl braids have been popular and trendy for a good long while now but there is just something that seems to have happened over the last few months that has taken out love for them to new levels. French curl braids, which are just box braids with defined curls at the end just look so much better and cuter lately. There must be something in the air with these hairstylists lately because they are absolutely killing this style.

3. Short Twists

With summer right around the corner, this is a cute, easy, lightweight braided hairstyle to wear. And don’t be afraid to embrace a little color with a hairstyle like this. You gotta for reds and browns if you want a look that really pops with this style.

4. Bohemian Faux Locs

So who isn’t absolutely obsessed with faux locs at the moment? Especially the long bohemian style locs that never fail to look absolutely gorgeous. This is a protective way of styling your hair that will make you feel like a goddess. It’s such a fun hairdo, with endless ways to style it other than just wearing it down. Let me tell you guys, these types of faux locs look so good when you throw them up in a bun, it looks so chic!

5. Lemonade Fulani Braids

There is this new way to do the famous lemonade braids and it seems to be with really gorgeous style that combines lemonade braids with fulani style braids. If you’ve seen any of the two hairstyle then you know that this new look is basically an updo that combines cornrows at the front with box braids or twist braids at the back. All I’ll say is that this is a look that absolutely slays.

6. Short Goddess Braids

I feel like we all know and love goddess braids but you can totally refresh the style by getting it as a bob or shoulder length instead. Goddess braids are this cute and trendy way of doing box braids in which you attach curly pieces of loose hair to you throughout your box braids, for a gorgeous boho effect. There is something so cute about short goddess box braids!

7. Classic Twist Braids

Classic twists are making a comeback and I’m here for it. I honestly don’t know why it seemed like we stopped doing this style of braids for a while because they look so good. There is something so satisfying about this hairstyle, it’s one of those looks that is not purposefully messy – which is a look that we’ve been collectively gravitation towards lately. So if you want a quick hairstyle that looks clean and gorgeous then this is a look to consider!

8. Water Curl Box Braids

This is a style of doing box braids so that it has curly ends. And typically the style is done on a shorter length. These braids are called water curl braids because the curls at the end are created by using the hot water method (adding foam rollers to the ends of the braids and then dipping them in hot water).

9. Wavy Faux Locs

Another really popular way to do faux locs right now is to get them in this wavy style. It’s different from what we’ve been seeing lately and definitely a fun and free spirited hairstyle to try out if you’re stumped for what hairstyle to try out next.

10. island twist braids

These braids are such a fun way to add a fun twist to the classic twist braids. They are in that messy, boho style that we’re all loving right now. These would also make for the best braids to wear on a summer vacation. They’re so pretty!
