Every black girl loves a good protective hairstyle. I mean, you can protect your hair from damage and look good all at the same time! I love protective hairstyles and like most all black girls I put a lot of thought into picking my next hairstyle. Lets face it you’re going to be rocking that do for probably the next two months, so picking the right hairstyle is no small issue. We’re constantly on the hunt for the next amazing braided hairstyles to try out.
Since spring and summer months are almost here, I’ve been thinking a lot about what type of protective hairstyles I would do during these warmer months. There is nothing grosser than a sweaty scalp trapped under a mountain of hair. Which is why I always go for styles that use less hair and are easy to manipulate.
That’s what this post is basically going to showcase! Some amazing protective hairstyle ideas for summer, that are light and easy to maintain and manipulate. When it’s hot outside you don’t want hair that requires a lot of fuss, which is why I swear by protective styles for summer!
TIPS TO MAKE YOUR BRAIDS LAST LONGER
- Use a silk scarf to protect your hair at night: I know the whole point of doing braids is to protect your hair, so why add on the double protection of a scarf/bonnet? Well the scarf really does help to prevent your hair from fizzing up too early.
- Moisturize your hair: This one is really obvious. Moisturizing your hair is important to keep it healthy and it also helps to prevent an itchy scalp which can lead to scratching and scratching too much can ruin your braided hairstyle.
25 Protective Hairstyle Ideas for Summer
1. Chunky Butterfly Locs
Butterfly twists have become super trendy in the last few months. They are such a new or at least relatively new to me way to style and protect your hair. I won’t lie, in the beginning I absolutely did not like the look of butterfly locs but they really grew on me over time and now I think they are a super cute way to style your hair.
2. Stitch Tribal Braids
Cornrows are such a fierce look. Don’t you think so? And stitch braids just take the hairstyle to a whole new level of bad-assery. Also just a quick tip, I feel like with any type of feed in braids, where a lot of pulling is done to he front hairs, its important to ask your hairstylist to leave out those fragile baby hairs. Protect those edges at all costs ladies!
3. Passion Twist
Passion twists are such a cool way to elevate the plain old twisted hairstyles we’ve been doing for years.

I will swear by knotless box braids until I ran out of breath. Why wouldn’t you choose knotless over regular braids? They’re lighter and freer and put less strain on your actual hair. Plus their really cute!

The reason why jumbo braids are so popular is because with big braids you get to spend less time in that salon chair and use less hair! This hairstyle is super super cute and just screams summer or is it just me?
